Das Konzept der mundauflösenden Arzneimittelverabreichung entstand aus dem Wunsch, den Patienten eine bequemere Möglichkeit der Medikamenteneinnahme zu bieten. Für viele Patienten ist es schwierig, Tabletten und Hartgelatinekapseln zu schlucken. Da die Schluckfähigkeit mit zunehmendem Alter abnimmt, klagen viele ältere Patienten darüber, dass es sehr schwierig ist, Medikamente in Form von Tabletten einzunehmen. Daher halten sie sich nicht an die Verschreibung, was zu einer hohen Inzidenz von Non-Compliance und einer unwirksamen Therapie führt. In einigen Fällen, wie z. B. bei Reisekrankheit, plötzlichen allergischen Anfällen oder Husten und wenn kein Wasser zur Verfügung steht, kann das Schlucken von herkömmlichen Tabletten schwierig sein. Solche Probleme können durch eine mundauflösende Tablette (Mouth dissolving Tablet, MDT) behoben werden. In solchen Fällen ist die Bioverfügbarkeit des Arzneimittels deutlich höher als bei der herkömmlichen Tablettenform.
