The philosophical “big bang” represented by Plato’s Parmenides gave rise to Neoplatonism, a school of thought whose influence punctuated all of Greek and Roman Antiquity and whose echoes persisted until the Renaissance. This reference work has still been reputed to be an obscure, even abstruse, dialogue. These three previously unpublished courses by Lucien Jerphagnon (1921-2011) unravel its complexities, while revealing its hidden harmony. The first series of courses presented in 1973 and revised in 1979-1980 – a personal confrontation between a philosopher and a reputedly arduous text – offers a linear analysis of the text and of the renowned hypotheses. The second (1982-1983) relates the history of the interpretations of Parmenides up to Plotinus’ era. The last part recreates the seminar held at Université de Caen in 1983-1984, featuring an annotated reading of Porphyry’s Life of Plotinus.
