He was not an army doctor, but an elderly physician with some professional and personal knowledge of myself which dated back to childhood. That is to say, he knew me well. So it was but natural that he should sound me, a convalescent, both for his own satisfaction and for mine. The medical board would see me no more, - indeed, I was discharged from the Army, and certified as having a "perfect physique." In spite of such a flattering official report I knew that Dr. Bernard's opinion would be more sympathetic. He was a friend of the family. I ought rather to say he had been a friend of the family, for the whole family of the Mortimers was dead - excepting me, Richard - which sad fact made me all the more anxious to remain alive.
