This collection of fifty war poems explores conflict through the lives of soldiers, civilians, children, parents and animals. Moving between battlefields, shelters, occupied streets and damaged homes, the poems reveal how war enters ordinary routines and changes familiar places.
Each poem offers a distinct perspective. Some employ rhyme, others conversational free verse, fragments, letters or understated humour. Their subjects include separation, captivity, displacement, injury, remembrance and the difficult adjustment to peace.
Small details carry much of the emotional weight: a spare button, unfinished schoolwork, a violin, washing on a line, a carefully prepared meal. Through these objects and encounters, the collection examines grief, fear, moral uncertainty and endurance without relying on grand declarations.
Alongside suffering are moments of tenderness and practical kindness. Repaired bridges, reopened bakeries and newly planted trees suggest that recovery begins slowly, through shared work, patience and everyday human care.
This is a poetry collection from a totally fictitious RAF pilot. Any resemblance to anyone living or dead is purely coincidental.
