very person is born into an agreement they never signed.
It has no author anyone can name and no terms anyone can read. Yet it follows you into every family, congregation, classroom, and workplace you enter, and for some people, however faithfully they keep it, full acceptance never comes.
In Out, Caleb Farmer names this agreement the unwritten contract and describes the people who live on its margin: present at every table and never fully at any, seen once and never again, valued while useful and dropped when they are not. Standing in the lineage of the social contract, Carole Pateman's The Sexual Contract, and Charles Mills's The Racial Contract, Farmer describes a contract that governs everyone and that can put a person out where no category explains it.
Drawing on sociology, psychology, and theology, from Bourdieu, Du Bois, Goffman, and Turner to Crenshaw, Freyd, and Volf, Out shows:
• Why being out is a condition, a habitus carried from room to room, rather than a single event
• How a person can be outside while standing inside their own family or church
• What it means to be the faithful discarded: dropped after keeping every term
• How relational debt turns belonging into a ledger, and why freedom so often means living without what you need
• How race, class, gender, age, ability, and other identities shape the terms
• What people on the margin offer, and whether there is community there in truth
Then the book turns from contract to covenant: to the God who went outside the camp, and to the work everyone shares, bringing the out in, so that it can never be said of anyone that they never found a way in.
Each chapter opens with a composite life, engages the scholarship in depth, and closes with questions for reflection, making Out suited to personal reading, classrooms, and small groups.
