In P-47 Thunderbolt: America's Heavyweight Fighter, Stephen Carrington tells the story of one of the largest, most powerful, and most versatile single-engine fighters of the Second World War. Conceived as a high-altitude interceptor and built around the formidable Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine, the Thunderbolt entered combat as an imposing machine whose size seemed to challenge conventional ideas about fighter design. Yet over the skies of Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Pacific, the P-47 proved itself as an escort fighter, air-superiority fighter, and devastating fighter-bomber, earning a reputation for tremendous firepower, exceptional diving performance, and an extraordinary ability to survive battle damage.

Drawing on wartime records, operational reports, technical documentation, and firsthand accounts, Carrington follows the Thunderbolt from Alexander Kartveli's drawing board and Republic Aviation's factories to the demanding realities of combat. He explores the engineering behind its distinctive turbo-supercharger system, the industrial effort that produced more than 15,000 aircraft, and the constant improvements that expanded its range and capabilities. From battles with the Luftwaffe high above Germany to attacks on railways, armor, bridges, and supply columns during the Allied advance across Europe, the P-47 evolved into one of the most effective tactical combat aircraft of the war.

More than the story of a powerful fighter, this book examines the combination of engineering ambition, American industrial strength, tactical innovation, and human skill that made the Thunderbolt so successful. Massive, rugged, and armed with eight .50-caliber machine guns, the P-47 became the heavyweight of America's wartime fighter force, a combat aircraft whose remarkable strength and adaptability secured its place among the defining machines of the Second World War.
