Charles Meryon (Paris 1821-Charenton 1868), Charles Baudelaire (Paris 1821-Paris 1867). Dans une lettre à sa mère datée du 4 mars 1860, Baudelaire écrit en parlant des gravures de Meryon : « Je te dirai que je les désirais et que je les cherchais depuis plusieurs années. » Il y eut un projet de livre en commun et Baudelaire, comme l’atteste sa correspondance, alla le plus loin possible pour que ce projet prenne corps. Meryon déjà fou ne le permit pas. L’ensemble unique et très troublant des dix-neuf gravures sur Paris semble faire écho à « La forme d’une ville change plus vite hélas que le coeur d’un mortel. » Il nous a semblé que réaliser ce rêve des deux hommes cent quarante ans plus tard était une utopie de la Bibliothèque, mais aussi l’hommage à un Paris en pleine mutation d’un des plus grands poètes et d’un des plus grands graveurs du XIXe siècle. Dix-neuf gravures de Meryon sur Paris font écho aux Tableaux parisiens de Baudelaire.
