Phantom Phury was never intended to be only Richard's story. He spent years gathering the memories and firsthand accounts of the pilots and Radar Intercept Officers who served beside him and combining their experiences with his own. The flights in these pages actually happened, and many of the stories were contributed by the men who lived them. Richard wrote the book to honor the Marines he considered his brothers, and to preserve the courage, sacrifice, camaraderie, humor, and remarkable bond they shared.
Those who knew Richard knew that "Joker" was more than a call sign. He was confident, spirited, fiercely loyal, quick with a story and a laugh, and immensely proud of being a Marine. But beneath the fighter-pilot swagger was a man who cared deeply about the people in his life. The friendships forged during those years never left him. Decades later, he still missed the call signs, the ready room, the laughter, the flying, and most of all, the friends. He carried tremendous respect for the Marines who served beside him, particularly those who never came home. At the same time, he knew how fortunate he was for the life that followed. In the final pages of this book, Richard wrote simply, "I am a lucky guy and have a great family!"
Richard passed away on August 6, 2026. It was his longtime dream to see Phantom Phury published and the story of VMFA-334 shared with the world. Although he did not live to hold the finished book in his hands, his family is honored to complete his final mission-to place these stories into the hands of readers and ensure the Marines he worked so hard to remember are remembered still.
