Die Lehre des Plattform-Sutras wird dem sechsten Chan/Zen-Patriarchen Liuzu Dajian Huineng (auch: Caoxi Huineng, 638-713) zugeschrieben. Die früheste bekannte erhaltene Version stammt aus Dunhuang (9. Jh.). Wir legen hier die Übersetzung der um ca. ein Drittel längeren, so genannten Zongbao-Version aus dem 13. Jh. vor, die in die Taishô Tripitaka (No. 2008) Eingang fand.Die Hauptthemen des Textes sind Versenkung (samâdhi) und Weisheit (prajnâ) sowie plötzliches Erwachen. Huineng relativiert die Bedeutung der Sitzmeditation und erläutert seine Lehre in zahlreichen Begegnungen mit Schülern.
