Gli storici dell'arte che applicano il termine "arte sacra" a qualsiasi opera di soggetto religioso dimenticano che l'arte è essenzialmente forma. Perché un'arte possa essere chiamata "sacra" non basta che i suoi soggetti derivino da una verità spirituale, bisogna anche che il suo linguaggio formale testimoni della stessa fonte. Non è questo il caso dell'arte religiosa del Rinascimento o del Barocco, che non si distingue per nulla, dal punto di vista dello stile, dall'arte fondamentalmente profana di quel periodo. Merita la denominazione di "arte sacra" solo un'arte le cui stesse forme riflettano la visione spirituale propria a una data religione.
