Projekt Avantgarde: Es geht in diesem Buch darum, wie die ästhetische Avantgarde ihren Anspruch einer gänzlich neuen, das Leben verändernden Kunst formuliert und wie sie ihr Projekt umzusetzen versucht hat. So werden Selbstverständnis und avantgardistische Theorie, die seit dem europaweiten Aufbruch der Avantgardebewegungen im frühen 20. Jahrhundert entworfen wurden, vorgestellt. Zentral dafür sind die Neubestimmung des avantgardistischen Künstlers (und seines Publikums) sowie seine Anverwandlung des Manifestes, das zur Topgattung der Avantgarde und der einzelnen Ismen wurde. Die Frage nach der avantgardistischen Auffassung von Arbeit und Arbeitsverweigerung gestattet Einblicke in ein bislang kaum erforschtes Aktionsfeld der Avantgarde - allesamt Bereiche, die zeigen können, wie das Projekt Avantgarde funktioniert hat.
