Qualität der Schule ist ein Thema, das die deutsche Erziehungswissenschaft bereits in den 1960er-Jahren entlang der großen deutschen Bildungsreform in unterschiedlichen Rollen diskutiert und mitgestaltet hat. Die Arbeit rekonstruiert Qualität der Schule als deutsches Reformprogramm mit internationalen Bezügen. Der Qualitätsbegriff wurde innerhalb dieses Programms als Pol einer modernen, egalisierenden Bildungspolitik ins Zentrum der Reform gestellt. Die Abhandlung zeichnet die Entwicklung der Sichtweise der Qualität der Schule von der chancenausgleichenden Gesamtschule als Versuchsschule Ende der 1960er-Jahre bis hin zur Auffassung der Qualität der Schule als guter Schule und Schulentwicklung in den 1990er-Jahren nach.
