Read Chinese Without Guessing - Level A1.2: 我在北京的每一天 continues Lucas's life in Beijing and helps you read, speak, and understand Chinese without guessing or a dictionary.

No guessing.
No dictionary.
Just reading.

The Big Idea: Chinese Word Order

This level introduces the tool that makes beginner Chinese sentences click: where a word sits in the sentence is its grammar.

Chinese verbs never change. The basic order is familiar:

Subject → Verb → Object
我吃面包。I eat bread.

But time and place normally come before the verb:

Subject → Time → Place → Verb → Object
我每天早上七点在家吃早饭。Every day, I eat breakfast at home at seven.

Question words also stay where the answer belongs:

你去哪儿?Where are you going?
我去车站。I am going to the station.

Across ten chapters, these patterns repeat until they feel natural.

Everyday Life in Beijing

Lucas has finished his first week in Beijing. Now he is building a routine with Coco, Xiaoyu, and café owner Mr. Wang.

  • Daily routines, meals, work, and rest
  • Shops, parks, stations, cafés, and transport
  • Family, measure words, time, and weather
  • Rooms, objects, locations, 不, 有, and 在

Four Reading Layers, One Clear Method

Each paragraph first appears with English pronunciation and tone numbers. Below it, the same Chinese and pinyin appear with natural English meaning, so your eyes can follow without losing their place.

Blue guidance shows how to say it.
Purple guidance shows what it means.

Next, the same story appears in Chinese with pinyin but without English-a gentle step toward independent reading.

Hanzi From the Beginning

This book expands the cumulative character count from roughly 150 to about 300. The real growth comes from recognizing more hanzi.

Pinyin stays on every word. Themed repetition strengthens memory.

Pronunciation Without IPA

Every syllable carries a simple English-based respelling and tone number:

¹ high and steady · ² rising · ³ dipping
⁴ sharply falling · ⁰ light and neutral

Tone changes are built in, including 不 before a fourth tone and the light second syllables of 妈妈 and 爸爸.

Inside Every Chapter

  • Interlinear story with pronunciation and meaning
  • Chinese-only story with full pinyin
  • Reading comprehension and HSK-style questions
  • Vocabulary practice and useful expressions
  • One focused grammar lesson
  • Two short writing tasks
  • Complete answer key

Who This Book Is For

Ideal for learners who completed A1.1 or already know greetings, 是, 有, 的, 吗, numbers, colors, and simple possession. Motivated beginners can start here.

It suits visual learners, independent students, HSK 1 candidates, and anyone who prefers reading aloud without audio files, IPA, apps, or repeated dictionary searches.

What You Will Achieve

By the end, you will have met roughly 300-450 words built from about 300 cumulative characters, covering routines, food, family, travel, time, weather, and rooms.

After A1.1 and A1.2, you will have a strong foundation for HSK 1.

Read Aloud and Keep Moving

Read the pronunciation layer aloud, check the meaning, then reread the Chinese-only version. Complete the exercises, try the writing tasks, check the answers, and continue without waiting for perfection.

Consistency matters more than intensity. Fifteen focused minutes a day can build lasting skill.

Your voice is the bridge between recognizing Chinese and speaking it confidently.
