Recon opens as AJ, the hero, is practicing martial arts alone in his dojo. Another man, Riko, arrives at AJ's dojo intent on shooting him. The novel jumps back in time to recap why the shooting took place. A gang of drug dealers kidnap a chemist and his daughter. The police are called, but the two detectives given the case are dirty cops who have been protecting the drug dealers for kickbacks. Enter AJ, an ex-military special forces operative and martial arts expert, called in to undertake the recon mission to find Crawford.
