Seit Kant stehen sich zwei Modelle der Lust am Schönen gegenüber: Das eine versteht die ästhetische Lust als Freude an einer besonderen Erkenntnis, das andere beschreibt diese Lust als Vergnügen an einem Spiel, in dem wir gerade frei sind von Erkenntnis. Beide Modelle, das Erkenntnismodell der hermeneutischen wie das Spielmodell der formalistischen Tradition, sind, so Kerns These, in einem falschen Gegensatz gefangen. Kern löst diesen Gegensatz auf, indem sie im Anschluß an Kant die Theorie der ästhetischen Erfahrung von deren entscheidendem Merkmal her entwickelt: der ästhetischen Lust. Die ästhetische Erfahrung ist autonom, argumentiert Kern, nicht, weil sie ohne Bezug zum Erkennen ist, sondern weil sie unser Erkennen in ein Moment des Spiels verwandelt.
