Shambles is the first hand account of Marianne Fischer, daughter of a Swiss mother and Austrian father, growing up in the ethnic German part of Czechoslovakia, know as the "Sudetenland". She describes her girlhood struggles under a Fascist takeover, her capture, her internment in a Russian labor camp and ultimate escape to her aunt in Switzerland, and her eventual immigration to America.
