'One day a child saw something glisten in the drying mud, white and tiny as a star in the night sky. It sparkled in the sun but when a brave man tasted it, it was salt, bitter as bile. Thenceforth, every day as the water retreated, the white crystals sprang on the surface of the drying mud and a foul stench spread over the lake, for the salt was poison.'
Blamed for the disaster that has overwhelmed his lakeside home, the boy, Tark, is forced to flee. Deep in the desert he finds a hidden valley inhabited by another people who spare his life because he is so young. He learns to assimilate into their culture but when survivors of his own clan arrive, he faces an irresolvable dilemma.
Set in no particular place or time, The Boy Who Found Salt is an unputdownable story of environmental disaster, superstition, and survival.
