Seven quiet evenings, and one letter finding its way home for Christmas.
A child writes a letter in pencil at the kitchen table, folds it in three, and puts the stamp on crooked. Nobody straightens it, because it does not matter. From there the letter travels: into the round red postbox on the corner, onto the postman's bicycle, into the little red van, across the sorting table, under the date stamp, onto the night mail train, the mail plane, the post boat, the sled in the mountains - until at last it drops through a letter slot a long way from where it began.
Each evening holds two short stories and a wordless picture - a moment to rest your eyes before the next page. Nothing hurries, nothing frightens, and nobody is waiting for anything except sleep. The language is slow and soft, made for a parent's voice in low light.
For ages 2 to 9. Read both stories, read one, or stop wherever sleep arrives.
