The Enigma is a monumental mediumistic novel dictated by the spirit of Count J. W. Rochester through the psychography of María Gertrudes. This historical and spiritual epic sheds light on the obscure reign of Cambyses II, the Achaemenid king of Persia who conquered the majestic lands of Egypt. Remembered by history as a cruel and mad despot, Cambyses is revealed here as a deeply tormented spirit, a man afflicted by a mysterious sacred disease and relentlessly pursued by ancient karmic debts and the dark forces of the infernal god Moloch. The narrative plunges the reader into the opulent palaces of Babylon and the sacred temples of the Nile, tracing the turbulent transition of power following the death of his magnanimous father, Cyrus the Great.

Upon ascending the throne, Cambyses rules with unyielding tyranny. Driven by an insatiable thirst for dominance, he conquers Egypt and brutally imposes his will upon the defeated pharaoh and the priestly castes. His spiritual blindness leads him to desecrate the sacred Apis bull and massacre the priests of Amun, sparing only the High Priest Ranofer. Through Ranofer's profound wisdom and the intervention of Cyrus's spirit from the afterlife, Cambyses briefly witnesses the sublime light of the Sun of Osiris, yet his deeply rooted pride and earthly passions continuously drag him back into the abyss of madness. The plot thickens with heart-wrenching palace intrigues, centering around Cambyses's forced marriage to his pure-hearted sister, Aristona. Unbeknownst to the king, Aristona harbors a secret, forbidden love for the gifted Egyptian artisan Artestes-Dahr, with whom she conceives a child.

When the tyrannical monarch discovers this hidden romance, his vengeance is swift and merciless, leading to the tragic martyrdom of the lovers. Simultaneously, a dangerous conspiracy brews in the shadows of the Persian empire, orchestrated by the ambitious Darius and his father Hystaspes, who seek to usurp the throne. They exploit the mysterious disappearance of Cambyses's noble brother, Prince Smerdis, who secretly takes refuge in the Egyptian temples to study the sacred sciences. The inexorable law of karma ultimately claims Cambyses in the harsh desert, where a self-inflicted wound and maddening spiritual visions bring his reign to an agonizing end. The Enigma is a spellbinding tale of power, reincarnational debts, and the eternal clash between shadow and light, masterfully demonstrating that true freedom is found only in love and spiritual redemption.
