The Perfect Trace

Forensic analyst Dana Keaton trusts evidence because evidence is supposed to contain uncertainty.

Then a homicide trace lands in her queue with a 99.982 percent match-and no meaningful variance at all.

When Dana strips away the system's corrections, she finds an incomplete sample beneath the perfect result. Missing variables have been filled. Environmental noise has been erased. A suspect has been attached before the evidence was fully analyzed. And every attempt to preserve the original data quietly disappears.

The deeper Dana looks, the worse it gets. Years of convictions carry the same impossible signature: incomplete evidence enters the system, certainty comes out, and the process in between is hidden from everyone who depends on the result.

Then Dana finds Owen Barrett, a man convicted by trace evidence that places him at a crime scene during a window when he was already in custody.

To expose what is happening, Dana will have to risk her certification, her career, and possibly her freedom. Because the system does not need to falsify evidence.

It only needs to complete it.

And once the perfect trace becomes the official truth, proving what really happened may be impossible.
