A better fighter isn't simply someone who knows more techniques. It's someone who can recognize problems, make decisions and adapt when things don't go according to plan.
The Thinking Fighter explores how martial artists and coaches can develop those abilities through purposeful training, intelligent preparation and meaningful resistance.
Drawing on decades of experience teaching martial arts, coaching competitors and studying human performance, Nathan Carlen examines what it means to build a reliable game, prepare for competition and respond when the unexpected happens.
At the heart of the book is a practical approach to skill development: Learn. Practice. Adapt. Apply.
From Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and striking to weapons-based martial arts, the principles apply across disciplines. The book explores how athletes develop their strengths, how coaches create better learning environments and how both can become more effective problem solvers.
Written for martial artists, competitors and coaches who want to understand not just what works, but why, when and under what conditions.
Train with purpose. Think under pressure. Solve the problem.
From the Author:
This book is my attempt to put into words the teaching philosophy I've developed over decades of training, teaching and coaching. It reflects what I've learned from my instructors, my students, the athletes I've coached and my own mistakes along the way. It's not a claim to have all the answers. It's an explanation of how I've come to understand fighting, learning and teaching, and why I believe the ability to recognize and solve problems matters more than simply collecting techniques.
