Lars Distelhorst unterzieht einerseits Judith Butler ausgehend von ihren neuen Veröffentlichungen einer systematischen Relektüre. Dabei setzt er sich zum Ziel, Butlers Theorien zum Körper und zur politischen Dimension des Geschlechts gegenüber der vor allem in der deutschen Debatte vehementen Kritik zu rehabilitieren. Andererseits verknüpft Distelhorst den hegemonietheoretischen Ansatz Ernesto Laclaus mit der Frage nach der sozialen Konstruktion geschlechtlicher Identität. Was auf diese Weise entsteht, ist eine innovative und in der einschlägigen Literatur bis zum heutigen Tag ausstehende Verbindung der Theorien von Butler und Laclau. Butler wird ins Politische gewendet und verliert den Anschein des postmodernen "anything goes"; Laclau gewinnt durch den Bezug auf die Konstruktion geschlechtlicher Identität ein klar umrissenes Feld der Analyse, auf dem seine Theorie der Hegemonie ihr Potential offenbaren kann.
