Uncomfortable Topics

This book began with my passion for being a parent and my experiences as a stepparent. Over the past forty years, I have experienced the joys, challenges, mistakes, and hard-earned lessons that come with raising children and building blended families.
Looking back, I discovered that many of my greatest parenting victories happened when my partner and I communicated well. We did not always agree, but when we listened to each other, respected different points of view, and worked together, our children benefited.
Many of my mistakes can also be traced to the times when communication broke down. Too often, I focused on being right instead of listening, solving the problem instead of understanding my partner, or reacting emotionally instead of communicating.
This book is not about avoiding disagreements. Couples and parents will disagree.
As I watch my grandchildren grow and see my adult children navigate the joys and struggles of raising families of their own, I recognize many of the same challenges I faced years ago. Although the world has changed, the heart of parenting has not. Building strong relationships, communicating with intention, and learning from our mistakes remain the foundation of raising healthy, confident children.
