The village is behind them. The road out is not safe.

Halewick Ford's survivors leave with children, carts, records, animals, and everything grief lets them carry.

But the square-bell still sounds behind them.

Wheel ruts smooth themselves. Familiar paths bend wrong. The safest-looking road may be the one most eager to take them back.
