Kaum ein anderes Schweizer Kunstwerk hat eine so spannende und wechselvolle Geschichte wie die "Venus" des Basler Bildhauers Carl Burckhardt (1978-1923). Die Skulptur, grossartiges Zeugnis einer Epochenwende, war ursprünglich für den Böcklin-Saal im Kunstmuseum Basel vorgesehen. Doch sie kam in den Besitz des Arztes Theophil Dieterle, der sie 1910 dem Kunsthaus Zürich lieh. 1914 entschwand die "Venus" auf Veranlassung des Künstlers in Richtung Stuttgart Vor wenigen Jahren erwarb die Sophie und Karl Binding Stiftung die Skulptur, überliess sie dem Kunsthaus Zürich als Leihgabe und nun ab April 2013 als Schenkung. Lukas Gloor beschreibt die spannende Odyssee der "Venus" und untersucht auch die Rezeption des ungewöhnlichen Kunstwerks auf anschauliche Weise.
