This book began with a question we kept encountering in different forms, from different people, in different rooms: What is coaching, really? A new client would ask it before their first session, uncertain what to expect. A student beginning training would ask it after reading three different definitions that did not quite agree with one another. A colleague in another profession would ask it, half skeptical, wondering whether coaching was substance or simply good marketing for good conversation. We found ourselves answering the question differently each time, shaped by the room we were in - and eventually we realized that the question deserved a fuller answer than any single conversation could give it. This book, and the collection it opens, is our attempt at that fuller answer.
We come to coaching from different paths that turned out to converge. One of us arrived through counseling and pastoral care, watching individuals and families search for clarity about who they were made to be. The other arrived through theology, philosophy, and leadership, drawn to the question of what genuine transformation actually requires of a person, and of those who walk alongside them. Neither of us set out, early on, to become coaches in the professional sense this book describes. We arrived at coaching because we kept finding, across very different settings, that the people we most wanted to help did not need us to have their answers. They needed a conversation spacious enough, and skilled enough, to help them find their own.
That conviction sits at the center of everything that follows in this book. We did not write it to make you sound like a coach. We wrote it to help you understand, from the ground up, what coaching actually is - its philosophy, its principles, its relationship, its responsibilities - so that whatever techniques and skills you go on to learn in the rest of this collection are built on a foundation solid enough to hold them.
This first volume is intentionally not a book of scripts, models, or step-by-step formulas. Those will come. Before we teach you how to coach, we wanted to slow down long enough to make sure you understand what you would be doing, and why it matters - because a technique practiced without understanding tends to feel hollow, both to the coach performing it and to the client sitting across from them, however polished it may look from the outside.
We have tried to write plainly, without unnecessary jargon, and with genuine respect for the seriousness of what it means to sit with another human being's development. Coaching, done well, is a quiet, demanding, and deeply meaningful discipline. We hope this book helps you begin to understand why - and that it leaves you not with a finished picture of coaching, but with the right questions to keep asking as you continue building a practice, and a life, around this work.
