Sixteen real American places. One history that America still argues about.

A church on a Sea Island where classes began in 1862, while the Civil War was still being fought. A Nashville college hall paid for by nine students who went on the road and sang for their school's life. A two-room schoolhouse in Maryland with nine windows facing east, because the community that built it had no electricity and their children needed to see the page.

WHERE THEY LEARNED is a place-by-place history of Black education in the United States after slavery, told through sixteen sites that anyone can still go and see. It is not a travel diary. Each chapter takes one real, publicly known place, says plainly what it is and where it stands, and then tells the history that happened there properly and at length - who built it, what it cost them, and what a visitor can expect to find today.

What's inside:

- Penn Center on St. Helena Island, where the Port Royal Experiment rehearsed Reconstruction while the war was still on

- Hampton and the Emancipation Oak, where three men rowing to a fort in 1861 changed the meaning of the war

- Storer College at Harpers Ferry, where the Niagara Movement met in 1906

- Howard University and the Freedmen's Bureau, and the law school that built the strategy behind Brown v. Board

- Fisk University, Jubilee Hall and the singers who paid for it

- Cheyney, the oldest of them all, whose students were examined in Greek in public

- Wilberforce, Ohio - the first American college owned and run by Black Americans

- Berea College, closed to Black students by an act of the Kentucky legislature and upheld by the Supreme Court

- Avery in Charleston, Tuskegee, and the Rosenwald schools that Black families paid for twice

- Highlander, the Citizenship Schools, Moton in Farmville, Brown v. Board in Topeka, and Little Rock Central High School

Documented history, told factually: no imagined journeys, no invented dialogue, no reconstructed scenes. Includes an appendix of further sites, a note on sources, and a guide to planning a visit, with the plain warning that hours and access change and must always be checked with the site before you travel.
