Philosophe génial et inclassable, Wittgenstein continue aujourd'hui encore à fasciner et, malgré la quantité considérable d'études qui lui ont été consacrées depuis un demi-siècle, son œuvre et sa pensée conservent une part irréductible de mystère. Celui qui désirait rester dans l'histoire comme l'homme " qui a brûlé la bibliothèque d'Alexandrie " –; c'est-à-dire qui a mis un terme à la " grande philosophie occidentale " –;, comme il le confiera un jour dans un manuscrit, est d'abord un penseur acharné remettant sur le métier, jour après jour, avec une obstination confinant à l'obsession, les mêmes problèmes. Un philosophe sans concessions, refusant toute facilité et exerçant sur lui-même son impitoyable esprit critique. Ce volume s'efforce de rendre compte des différentes facettes de son œuvre en rassemblant des études rédigées à l'origine en différentes langues –; pour les unes déjà classiques, pour les autres inédites –;, et en laissant la place aux controverses exégétiques qui ont émaillé sa réception, à commencer par celle intervenue ces vingt dernières années entre les tenants du " New Wittgenstein " et les partisans de la lecture orthodoxe. Les contributeurs montrent l'actualité de Wittgenstein pour la philosophie en général, bien au-delà du cercle de ses disciples et par-delà le clivage, peu pertinent pour appréhender sa pensée, entre philosophie continentale et philosophie analytique. -- Wittgenstein, that brilliant and unclassifiable philosopher, still fascinates us and, despite the considerable amount of studies devoted to him over the past half century, his work and thinking retain a resolute element of mystery. He who wished to remembered historically as the man 'who burned down the library at Alexandria' –; in other words who put an end to 'great western philosophy' –; as he once expressed it in a manuscript, is first and foremost a relentless thinker who laboured over the same problems, day after day, with an obstinacy bordering on obsession – a philosopher who made no concessions, always rejecting the easy option and subjecting himself to the same pitiless critical gaze. This volume strives to represent the different facets of his work by assembling studies which were originally written in various different languages –; some of them already classics, others published here for the first time –; taking in the exegetic controversies that greeted his work, beginning with the one which has arisen in the past twenty years between the upholders of the 'New Wittgenstein' and those partisan to the orthodox interpretations. The contributors here demonstrate Wittgenstein's topicality as regards philosophy in general, extending well beyond the circle of his disciples and that division, of such little relevance to an understanding of his thinking, between continental and analytic philosophy.
