In 32 kurzen Skizzen begleitet der Ich-Erzähler (später Peter A., Herr Peter oder Sir Peter genannt), ein dauerhafter Besucher einer Völkerschau, die Ashantee (dt. Aschanti) bis zu ihrer Abreise. Durch Kommunikation mit den Aschanti entwickelt sich ein vertrautes Verhältnis, welches vom Besuch der Hütten bis zur erotischen Beziehung mit einem jungen Aschanti-Mädchen reicht.Peter Altenberg (1859-1919) war ein österreichischer Schriftsteller. Er gilt als einer der wichtigsten Vertreter des Impressionismus
