The only thing Raljebi's gotten out of college on distant Algeron is an exemption from the draft on his home planet. When his friend Quilq drops out to join a movement against the imperialistic war raking the galaxy, Raljebi decides to join him. But escaping the war proves harder than it seems. The peace commune turns out to be a squalid hellhole. A cult of xenophobic aliens wants the protesters dead.
