Maxwell Foster gave up life as a gambler to care for the eleven-year-old daughter he'd never met before. Settling down in Crest Stone and taking up work at the newly-opened Hannan Hotel, he sends for a mail-order bride to be a mother to Anna. It's difficult for him to admit, but he can't raise Anna on his own, not when she refuses to listen to him and runs off at the slightest inclination.

Cordelia Elliott is certain that becoming Max's mail-order bride will provide excellent material for the series of articles she's planning to send to her editor at a New York newspaper. Delia's idea is simple enough-marry Max, write her stories, and then find him someone else to fall in love with so that he'll be happy to divorce her before she returns home. But her plan slowly comes apart as she gets to know Anna and as she develops unexpected feelings for Max.

Delia knows she'll need to tell Max the truth about why she married him, but as soon as she makes up her mind to do so, Max receives a letter from Anna's grandfather. He intends to come to Crest Stone to collect Anna to raise as his own.
