La víctima acababa de presentar su tesis doctoral en la Universidad de Columbia sobre el régimen del dictador dominicano Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, a cuyo cargo correrían, según probaron las distintas investigaciones, su secuestro, tortura y asesinato. A pesar de que, en 1990, cuando Manuel Vázquez Montalbán publicó su ambiciosa novela sobre el caso, este se hallaba ya olvidado en gran medida, "Galíndez" causó conmoción, pues suponía un consumado artefacto político y literario que reabría la memoria de un pasado mal enterrado. Éxito inmediato entre la crítica y el público, traducida a diez idiomas y llevada al cine, se trata de una de las novelas más logradas de su autor, pues combina a la perfección los mecanismos narrativos de la investigación con la temática política y moral que constituyó el eje de su pensamiento.
