Bu vesile ile Kolombun yolculuklarindan birine de katilmis olan Bartoloméo de las Casas, 1510 yilinda Kübada papazlik görevine getirildi. Ayni zamanda, seferlere katilmis olmasi dolayisiyla kendisine encomienda denilen toprak parcasi verildi.Ancak bu sürecte sahit oldugu zulüm, siddet, soykirim gibi dehset verici olaylar sonrasinda verilen bu toprak parcasini tüm köleleriyle birlikte iade ederek, 1515te Ispanyaya döndü. Burada yasadiklarini anlatarak, Kizilderililerin haklarini korumak üzere bir yasa cikarilmasi icin calismalar yapti, komisyonlarda yer aldi. Alinan tüm tepkilere ragmen toprak sahipleri türlü cikar catismalari sebebi ile buna siddetle karsi cikmislardi Encomiendalardaki yerlilerin daha iyi kosullarda yasamalari yönünde bir yasa cikarilabilmis olsa da, bu yasa uzun ömürlü olamadi. Mücadelesini sürdürebilmek icin Chiapas Piskoposluguna atanmayi istedi fakat görev yaptigi süre icerisinde karsilastigi zorluklar onu yildirdigindan bu görevinden de istifa etti ve 1547de tekrar Ispanyaya döndü. Mücadele ile gecen ömrü 1566 yilinda Madridde sona erdi.Sömürgecilik uygulamalarinda pek fazla bir degisiklige yol acmasa da, kölelik ile ilgili yasananlari ilk agizdan anlatmasi bakimindan bir ilktir ve tarihte önemli bir yere sahiptir.
