Longtemps on a cru que l'auteur des Pensées, ignorant en théologie, n'avait été que le "secrétaire de Port-Royal". S'efforçant d'adopter l'esprit même de Pascal pour lire saint Augustin, Philippe Sellier, professeur de littérature française à la Sorbonne, a montré l'originalité théologique de l'auteur des Provinciales. Depuis lors, il est impossible de sous-estimer le Pascal théologien, de négliger la manière dont il a repensé l'héritage augustinien et de méconnaître combien il a contribué à transmettre une vision du monde et un certain christianisme qui dominèrent l'Eglise latine pendant près d'un millénaire et demi et marquèrent d'innombrables oeuvres littéraires jusqu'à celles de Baudelaire, Mauriac ou Julien Green.
