Cal Rainer keeps the parts of Los Angeles nobody wants to think about alive.

The locked pump rooms under the river. The emergency gates beneath the Metro. The buried switch stations designed to fail clean when the earth moves.

He trusts systems because people are harder.

Three years ago, Cal was underground on a maintenance call when his ex-wife died waiting for him at the hospital. His teenage daughter, Iona, has barely spoken to him since. Now the city's earthquake warning grid starts firing in the wrong order. Trains brake where they should run. Flood channels seal shut. Whole districts go dark before the shaking even starts.

Someone isn't predicting a disaster.

Someone is building one.

As Los Angeles buckles into panic, Cal learns a private disaster contractor is using the emergency network to sacrifice one dense corridor of the city, then emerge as the only force capable of "saving" what remains. Iona is trapped inside the target zone. To reach her, Cal will have to move through collapsing tunnels, flooded stations, armed response teams, and one woman who helped design the trap-and may be the only person who can stop it.

By dawn, the city will call it an earthquake.

If Cal fails, it will be a massacre.
