In 1977, an isolated island community at the mouth of the Amazon became the center of one of the most disturbing UFO waves ever investigated by a military force.

Night after night, residents of Colares and neighboring communities reported luminous objects moving above rivers, beaches, forests, and houses. Witnesses described spheres, cylinders, discs, and beams of light that appeared to follow people or descend toward the ground. Some residents claimed that these encounters left them with burns, weakness, numbness, puncture-like marks, and an overwhelming sense of fear.

The phenomenon became known locally as the Chupa-Chupa.

As panic spread across the region, families abandoned isolated homes, communities organized night watches, and frightened residents gathered around fires, prayers, fireworks, and improvised defenses. The Brazilian Air Force eventually responded with Operação Prato-Operation Saucer-a secret intelligence mission involving military observers, photographers, investigators, and surveillance teams.
